JA More than Money

HSBC sponsored Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide to launch a US$3.4 million, three-year global programme (2008-2010) to teach basic financial skills to 7- to 11-year-old students. This strategic commitment is designed to build upon the breadth and depth of HSBC's commitment to education and its support for JA Worldwide.

This global financial education programme will be launched in 15 countries and territories with Hong Kong being the first to launch in the Asia-Pacific region. The programme will reach 28 local primary schools in Hong Kong with support from HSBC employees as business volunteers and will benefit more than 2,400 primary four to six students in three years' time.

Sandy Flockhart, CEO, HSBC in Asia-Pacific became the first business volunteer to teach and share his personal financial management tips to students during the JA More than MoneyTM class.

"Through interactive discussions and games, students learn more about the role of money in daily life which will enable them to make wise financial choices in the future."

  • JA More than MoneyTM will teach students about earning, spending, sharing and saving money. Students learn about businesses they can start or jobs they can perform to earn pocket money.
  • The programme will be localised and piloted in 15 countries and territories across five continents in the 2008 - 2009 academic year.
  • JA More than MoneyTM aims to reach over 100,000 children worldwide in its first three academic years and it will expand globally as one of HSBC's most successful worldwide flagship youth financial literacy education programmes.

"With the support from the community and learning beyond the classrooms textbook, JA More than MoneyTM extends and enriches students' learning experience, in terms of enabling them to learn effectively from authentic experiences, cultivating positive values and strengthening their whole-person development."

Lam Wai Yan

"It's fun making choices. I get to decide whether to save or spend for my daily life."

Chan Hung To

"This programme is very interesting. Children learn how to earn money through games. They learn to allocate money and make good financial planning."
